Broken Wings - Prologue by Chriss Fitzpatrick Chapter 1

,

Lightning flashed across the sky and rain pounded on the catholic church roof.
The girl who had given birth to the child died and it caused an uproar among the priests.
The owner of the church was Father Joseph and his nine-teen year old apprentice Henry Tenelli.

Henry had stayed in the room with the new born baby boy while Father Joseph was in the meeting room arguing with all the other priests.

"I say we kill the il diavolo!" Father Joseph said.

"What? Listen to yourself father! He's the antichrist! He killed his own mother!"

"In the other room Henry held the baby boy in his arms trying to calm him. The boy was wailing and screaming as if he knew he would die soon if the fighting kept up in the other room.

"Shh, it's okay," Henry whispered to the boy. Henry had expected the boy to be born with horns on his head and red glowing eyes but the baby boy looked... well normal. Henry didn't understand why something so terrible could be in the form of an innocent looking child.

Henry felt chills go up and down his spine. What in the world opened that door? The candles in the room bursted with fire lighting up the darkened room. Henry yelped and backed into a corner the baby still in his arms. The baby pointed it's small finger at the statue of Jesus. Henry looked up and almost screamed.

A man stood on the balcony beams staring down at the boy. White wings unfurled from his back. The man looked straight at Henry. There was no golden or white light or halos. If any normal person had jumped the balcony they would have broken both there legs. Henry knew this man was from a higher power. Something was draining the angel's power and it wasn't the antichrist in Henry's arms. At the moment there was something far more dangerous out there in the storm then the child in Henry's arms.

The angel leaned against the wall his eyes closed. "You need to leave," the angel said quietly. "With the child. So go... run..."

Father Joseph ran through the door way looking at Henry with fear in his eyes. Henry looked back at the prayer bench and saw that the angel had disappeared. Henry always fantasized about having an encounter with an angel to be more beautiful. I prayed about this a lot and something tells me to keep the child alive."

"What if it's temptation?"

"Take the truck in the parking lot jump out that window with the child!"

"But Father Joseph what about you?"

"Henry I'm an old man now. Now go," Father Joseph said opening the window. I can take care of you and the child!"

Henry heard the priests coming down the halls screaming and ready to kill.

"Just go Henry!" Father Joseph pushed Henry out the window. Henry quickly landed on his feet and ran as fast as he could to the truck holding the child tightly in his arms. When he got into the truck Henry swore he heard gunshots. A few hours later Henry found himself at Father Joseph's private airport. Brooklyn.

Once Henry was in the private jet with the child he tried to collect his thoughts and plan everything out. Father Joseph left Henry with money. Enough to take care of the child, run a church and an orphanage if he wanted to. Henry looked at the child who was now sleeping. Henry thought of names. Henry didn't know if Father Joseph was killed or not. Henry sat there and prayed for the child and Father Joseph's life.
